Get your beer and liquor bottles ready because it’s about to go down! Bar Defender, a Simpson’s esque twist to traditional castle defense style games, pins you up against an evil multinational corporation who wants to level your favorite bar as part of their latest construction project. Determined to demolish it right away, they send in wave after wave of angry construction workers, police, riot squads and more to smash down the door and force you out. Like any loyal binge drinking alcoholic you’re not going to let someone take your favorite bar away without a fight. To succeed you’ve got to smash your enemies with a barrage of bottles until they wave the white flag and give up.
Bar Defender, by Extropia Games, replaces the traditional medieval based theme of most castle defense style games with a zainy compilation of sounds, graphics, and Simpson’s like cartoon characters. As you’d expect from any castle defense style game, to hit your enemies in Bar Defender you need to hurl beverages at appropriate launch angles and with adequate velocity. To do so you need to touch the screen and drag your finger up/down to increase/decrease the launch angle, and from left-to-right to increase/decrease the velocity. When ready just lift your finger and watch the bottles fly!
As you advance in the game your enemies become more difficult to stop. They come at you in greater density, at a faster pace, and are harder to damage. Waiting at the end of each level there is a boss that’s determined to stop you in your tracks. In total, there are 5 bosses to conquer. Each one driving their own unique bar demolishing vehicle. They drive anything from a standard police cruiser with a giant donut stuffed in the trunk to a fully armed military tank (APC).
In order to meet the game’s increasingly difficult challenges you’ve got to boost your morale and stock up on the best liquid weaponry. There are 5 different intoxicatingly thirst quenching beverages you can hurl at your enemies in this game. Each one causes a different level of damage and produces it’s own unique special effects. Boosting your morale allows you to take on more damage, essentially buying you more time to fend off your enemies. Each time you complete a level you earn money. To boost your morale and to acquire more effective weapons you’ve got to buy them with the money you earn. This is where the strategy of Bar Defender kicks in. If you don’t purchase the right combination of morale and weaponry, you will most certainly not succeed.
Overall we enjoyed the cartoon-like twist that Bar Defender provided. We found the game-play to be pretty fun, straight forward, and smooth. The throwing motion works well, the bottles fly realistically through the air, and the sound effects and characters match the overall theme of the game perfectly. The first two levels of the game we found to be very easy, and didn’t really require any strategy to conquer. However, once we got to level 3 the game got more difficult. It’s clear that as you advance in the game it’s increasingly important for players to spend their money on upgraded weapons and morale boost wisely if they expect to advance.
